Space heaters are used in the winter months to provide supplemental heating. They are often used to warm up rooms that aren't well heated by the central heating system. However, when these convenient items are misused, they can cause fires. Stay warm and safe this winter by following these recommendations.

1. Size the Heater Appropriately for the Room Space

Heaters that are too small for a given space are often set to their max settings and run for long periods of time. This may cause them to overheat. When heaters are too large, they cause higher electrical bills and are more difficult to vent properly in a small room if they burn gas. Make sure to check their rating against the square footage of your room.

2. Allow Plenty of Space Around the Heater

There should be three feet of open space around the heater on all sides. Keep the area clear of combustible materials that are easily moved such as books, magazines, newspapers, clothing and clutter. Keep the heater away from curtains, bedding and carpeting. The heater should be on a level surface that is hard and non-combustible.

3. Never Use Multi-Outlet Strips or Extension Cords

Electrical heaters draw a high amount of electrical current. Most common multi-outlet strips and extension cords are not rated for the power draw of heaters and will overheat. This will melt the insulation and possibly start a fire.

4. Only Use Certified Heaters with Safety Features

Look for heaters that have been tested and certified by well-known companies such as Underwriter’s Laboratories. High quality space heaters have safety features that turn it off when it overheats or tips over.

5. Never Leave Heaters Unattended

When unattended, kids and pets may knock heaters over. Space heaters should not be placed in areas with lots of foot traffic or other areas where they can be easily knocked over. Never leave them running overnight. They can overheat from long hours of overnight usage when people are sleeping. If you feel cold at night, use extra blankets.

6. Gas Heaters Should Be Properly Ventilated

Only use gas heaters that are vented and follow the usage instructions. The vented gas should always go outside. Gas heaters produce carbon monoxide, which is odorless and very deadly.

7. Use Smoke Detectors in Rooms with Heaters

Make sure you have a working smoke detector in every room that has a heater. If you are using gas heaters, then include a carbon monoxide alarm as well.
